German Shorthaired Pointer Puppies

German Shorthaired Pointer Puppies

What is a German Shorthaired Pointer?

German Shorthaired Pointers were the first all-around hunting dogs bred in Germany in the late 1800s by breeders who were looking for a good companion that could also be a great gun dog or bird dog. German Shorthaired Pointers (GSP for short) are slightly smaller than a Pointer and have a chiseled head with almond-shaped eyes, large dark noses and dropped ears. GSPs are very people-oriented dogs and are best suited with people who are more active.

Sizes of German Shorthaired Pointers

  • Females: 21-23" tall and weigh about 45-60 pounds
  • Males: 23-25" tall and weigh about 55-70 pounds

Coat of German Shorthaired Pointer

GSPs have a thick, short, water-repellent coat that is very smooth and easy to groom. They do shed but not excessively.

German Shorthaired Pointer Temperament

The temperament and personalities of GSPs depend on a number of different factors including socialization, training, and heredity. This is why here at Prince's Quality Gun Dogs we pride ourselves on matching our dogs to our people.   Our puppies are from proven bloodlines and we have produced some of the top champions in the hunting world.  We know our bloodlines and which lines are suitable to live in the house. German Shorthaired Pointers are very intelligent and receptive to training, so many clients do enjoy having the perfect companion in the house and in the field.  Overall, they have friendly, playful temperaments and are very fun-loving dogs.

Training Your German Shorthaired Pointer

When it comes to training your German Shorthaired Pointer puppy, it is key to keep their training sessions short in order to keep their attention so they do not get distracted or bored. Because GSPs thrive on training and learning, it is recommended to start training once you bring your puppy home.
